FASHION | My Summer Wardrobe Essentials 2014

Summer Wardrobe Essentials

Summer dressing is something I struggle with...I blame it on being a Brit, I spend 90% of the year trying to layer on as much as possible in an effort to keep warm so when the sun shines it throws me a bit and I end up standing in front of my closet for a good hour crying 'But what do I wear???' which is dangerous because in the past it's led to a few impulse purchases that have ended up being barely worn. But there's a few old faithfuls that have been a bit of a godsend this year that I can also wear all year round so I thought I'd share my summer wardrobe essentials with you.

First up, tops. I love a good boyfriend tee to chuck on as they're just so comfy and the fact they're loose means you can keep nice and cool. My favourites are from the men's department at Uniqlo, like this Supima Cotton Crew Neck Short Sleeve T-Shirt £9.90. Linen is an excellent material when it's warm as it's breathable and keeps you cool, plus white shirts just look so good with blue denim and a tan. I got both of mine from Uniqlo (the Premium Linen Long Sleeve Shirt £29.90 and Premium Linen Sleeveless Shirt £19.90) and they were such worthy investments because they've lasted so well and always look good. A denim shirt is also a must, they're great to throw on as a cover up too if it gets cooler...they just look really effortless. I got mine a few years ago from Topshop but this Denim Long Sleeve Shirt is a fab alternative and is now just £9.90 in the sale...total bargain! Finally a cami top is an essential, perfect for chucking on with denim in the day time and can also be dressed up in the evenings. I got a fab one from H&M for only £12.99 that's not online but still available in store, if not here's a nice Strappy V Neck Cami £18 from Topshop.

As a denim addict I struggle giving up my skinnies so I stick to boyfriend denim when it's hot in classic blue and more recently white. My Slim Boyfriend Fit Ankle Length Jeans are now a measly £9.90 in the sale, I definitely recommend them! The white pair featured here are Topshop Ripped Mom Jeans £40 but I got mine from ASOS. I'm not much of a skirt person but last year I bought this H&M Denim Skirt £14.99 and lived in it...as a black skinny jean addict this helped me get over withdrawal symptoms! I had to reorder it again this year though as mine is now a bit snug haha.

There are lots of classic sandals about but each year I like to buy a 'trendy' pair (did I really just say that?) to keep things current. This year I've opted for Topshop HEIGHTS Double Strap Sandals £26 which are brilliant Birkenstock dupes. I bought some ponyskin skate shoes way back in September from GAP but they're still getting loads of wear now...despite the material they're great for rainy days! Topshop KOOPER Slip Ons £50 are really similar.

Finally, a jacket as this is still the UK after all! I've been getting loads of wear out of my classic beige trench by Uniqlo and H&M duster coat as they're both lightweight and look amazing with bare legs (when I can be bothered to tan!) The coat in the collage is a Topshop Long Line Throw On Duster £79.00.

So there's my current wardrobe essentials this summer, although most are classics that will solve wardrobe dilemmas for years! Of course this isn't everything, I'd chuck in a classic summer and denim dress too as well as a few more little tops (probably black!) but these are my tried and trusted favourites. What would make it on your list?

  2. Such classic pieces. Earlier this week, the fashion features editor of Grazia did a personal shop with me in Gap (I know haha) and she also helped me get lots of classic pieces and talked about how to build a staple wardrobe. I couldn't help but think you'd be so proud of my final picks! I'll wear them on the blog soon but I love your chic style and I'm excited to try it out!

  21. Such beautiful picks!

I struggle with summer-time dressing too, and also blame the horrendous supposed 'summer' the UK treats us too haha ;) The Birks are a fab wardrobe addition, and I can see the trend staying strong for a while! £26 is so reasonable for Topshop too, what a find <3

I'm horrendously behind on trends this year, so for summer so I must catch up with everything, feel very out of the loop!
