BEAUTY | The Chop

shoulder length hair with fringe

So I got my hair a long overdue cut. For the past three years I've been cutting it myself because I never have good experiences in salons, which is half them (never doing my hair how I like it and instead trying to make in me into the rest of the TOWIE-fied girls) and half me (just being the most socially awkward person ever.) This time was the same, it was a last minute decision after an early morning visit to the hospital because I was just so sick of my ratty barnet. I was all trainers, no make up and unbrushed knotty hair and without my phone so I couldn't show her what I wanted exactly so to be fair to the lady had a challenge on her hands. I did try to tell her I'm not usually so scruffy but she didn't believe my lies, just like when I said I didn't cut my own fringe but she was very nice about it. She just told me not to do that any more but I couldn't promise her anything because all of my DIY cuts have been spontaneous, 1AM affairs. She also did my hair all curly and was telling me how to blow dry it properly but I didn't have the heart to tell her that I don't even know where my hair dryer is, I thought that might upset her because she was trying so hard to make me girly. I didn't like my hair how she did it anyway, it was a ringletty bob and I looked like a Victorian child. I couldn't ask them for changes because I had to leave quickly as  when I took my purse out to pay a bra was attached to it and everyone definitely saw. I do not know why there was a bra in my bag, I'm quite certain that the Gods of Awkwardness planted it there to ruin my life. I don't know what I've done to offend them but after 21 years they surely need to LET IT GO and pick on someone else.

But now I've washed it myself and just let it air dry I like it a lot better! I definitely feel a lot more like myself with shorter hair, I want to go even shorter soon like this is my dream hair. Well actually Jack White has my dream hair in the Icky Thump video or every haircut that Shannyn Sossamon has had but apparently those dos are yuck. But we shall see, I think I'll chop off another inch and add a few more layers, what do you think?

  1. I have to say that I never like my hair when I'm at the hairdressers but always like it much more when I wash it.

  2. Short hair forever! It looks great on you, and you definitely have the face shape to go shorter too, lucky. I'd love to go shorter but my head is so round, I'm terrified of ending up with something that makes me look even more like the moon than usual.

I feel you on the awkwardness thing too, for some reason hair salons bring out the most awkward side of me. Last time I got my hair cut I had to show my stylist a selfie of how I usually style it because she didn't understand. I intended to use one where you couldn't see my face but when I opened my gallery this huuuuuge self portrait I'd taken for my blog came up and she's like "oh... is that you?" I felt ridiculous. It's probably why I find it hard to stick to one salon... I embarrass myself into exile everywhere I go...!

  3. I really like it! I think short hair suits you so well :) I always cut my own hair too and I'm not gonna stop! No matter what the hairdressers say heh heh. xxx

  4. Love the long bob with bangs! You're lucky to be able to pull it off, it's not for everyone. I feel the same way about doing my hair, makeup and dressing in general. Less is more! The more I do the worst I look...some people are better au naturel, I guess...

  5. I love shorter hair...I can never grow mine past chin length because I feel longer hair doesn't suit me!

You really suit this cut, and you have the kind of bone structure that I think would suit even shorter hair!! I absolutely agree with you on the last minute decision though, I will never think my haircut through too much. I'll just think I want to do it, then do it!

And you know what? Most of the time nowadays I'll just cut my hair myself. I think in the last couple of years I've been to the hairdressers twice, and that's it. A month or so ago I took the clippers to my hair and my hair is a short pixie, and I think I've got to the point in my life where I don't care what other people think - if I think I rock it, that gives me a confidence I wouldn't have if someone was just like "Oh, it suits you"

  6. OW honey! Beautiful changes!

I like your idea about future cutting. But you will need to find your blow drier for it and even learn how to use curling iron シ

    Good luck princess ♥

  7. Your hair cut is so lovely! I rarely have good experiences at the hairdressers so I kinda shy away from going... I should've gone back ages ago, but they always cut more layers into my hair when I specifically tell them not to! I love shorter hair - really wish that I could pull it off but I never can! x x

  8. I love it! You totally suit the whole messy bob thang :) I hate getting my haircut too, I don't know why it has to be such an awkward experience! Pretty sure I've had about three so far this year... haha xxx

  9. Josie, I'm loving the hair! I don't know what it looked like after you just got it cut, but it looks good now:) Shorter will be nice too, but I'm really digging it.

PS LOL on the bra thing. That's something that would happen to me.
PPS I love all of Shannyn's hairstyles too.

  10. Loved this post, can totally related to hating the hairdressers, although I just brave it as I'm too scared to cut mine myself! These days I just get a wash, cut and rough dry, no point wasting my money when they can never seem to style it right! I love your hair this length!

  11. Yours posts are so entertaining!! I feel like I know you in real life, I love it haha. I love the shorter do, suits you very well :) I've recently had mine chopped and it's taking some getting used to! Not that my hair ever grew past that yucky shoulder stage. Layers sound good, especially love that hairstyle you linked! Hope you're well xxxx

  14. love it!! Suits you so well, so ridiculously jealous right now! the Victorian child comment made me laugh haha, I cut my own hair too as it saves a lot of hassle and money but I think after pay day I really do need to get it sorted properly :( xx

  16. I think shorter hair definitely suits you, you look lovely! Had a laugh with you about the whole bra fiasco, if it makes you feel any better I once met Cillian Murphy and I accidentally dropped an erm, (clean) sanitary item on his foot. So embarrassing & I don't think I've ever brought it up online but all of us clumsy and awkward girls need to unite haha xx

  17. I hate hairdressers ok maybe a bit extreme but normally I have an idea in my head of what I want and come out looking like a pet poodle or a scarecrow or a hash between the two. I have had so many tears having my hair cut and regretting it. Your hair is lovely and really suits you. Awkwardness is the worst I always doing, saying things that are stupid embrace it . Hope you are feeling better nice to have you back Lucy x

  20. I love shorter hair. I would love to go back to my pixie cut of 5 years ago, but I think I would miss my ombre, so I have settled for a graduated bob for now. I just love that I don't have to spend hours over my hair, it's a five minute job...awesome. SO short hair forever girl.

I love this cut on you, you have such a goreous face - lovely skin and beautiful bone structure and the shorter hair really draws attention to that. So go for that dream cut of yours, hair always grows back.

  21. I really like this, it suits you! I keep cutting my hair shorter and shorter and it makes styling it so much easier (well, I'm too lazy to style it properly all the time but you know what I mean). The bra thing sounds like something that would happen to me haha xx

  22. Oh my I can relate to this post so so much.... I hate hairdressers... I'm STILL growing out a terrible cut I got back in February and they ALWAYS style my hair all poofy and princess-like. I once got told they were going to make my hair look like cheryl cole's and I just smiled politely while silently screaming inside. Your hair looks great though I'm v. jealous.
I thought I'd leave you a comment because I've just mentioned you and your blog on a little Q&A over on my blog for this liebster award thing.. one of my questions asked what blog I'm loving at the moment... and I've loved keeping up with yours recently. Head over and have a wee read if you want, even if your mention is only brief! www.maaybekatie.blogspot.co.uk

  24. This cut is just the perfect autumn hair-spo! I love, love, love the length and style, it just frames your pretty face perfectly Josie :) Your hair colour and cut just go hand in hand <3

So sorry you had such a crappy experience at the salon. I really do feel the same way about salons; even when I walk past one I just feel intimidated and shunned. There's just something about the vibes and auras of them that screams "unwelcome unless glossy zombie" to me! I'm very lucky to have a hairdresser that is effervescent, friendly and so easy to get along with, it feels like a friend coming over. I just don't know what I'd do otherwise! I had that problem at school, I felt too nervous to go to a salon so I used to just hack off random bits of my hair! Hardly a great look, but oh well ;) Thank goodness it's not just me that doesn't know how to use a curling iron! Why IS it so hard but why does everyone else seem to be able to manage? For me it just never works, just goes all crimpy haha! :| As for feeling awkward I definitely relate! I just feel awkward 99.9% of the time o.O
BUT I can safely assure you that after meeting you, the last thing I would call you is awkward! Achingly cool, hip and on point would be much better words of choice! <3

  25. I tend to cut my hair myself as well but decided to let it grow long and then cut the edges and donate them to charity.

  26. YES JOSIE you look so wicked, really laid back and it really suits your style. My pet hate is getting my hair cut and feeling like I have to throw out my whole wardrobe (I like drastic changes) but this is so seamless! <3

  29. Ahh it looks so great!! I have such long hair and keep thinking I'll get it cut real short, but I think, being a student, I won't be able to afford to keep it trimmed and my hair tends to go quite flat :( you always seem to have the best stories on here haha :P i hate when hair dressers over do your hair! I went to get mine done for prom and asked for a 'messy bun'. It was a ringlety overdone solid disgusting bun. Ended up doing my own hair and make up ergghhh.

  30. Yay I love the shorter hair! I recently chopped mine off too, it's feels so much nicer and healthier :)
