FASHION | So The Journey Begins Again...

The Curated Closet Challenge

If you're a long-term reader (haiii!) you may remember my attempt at a 5-Piece French Wardrobe. I started off well and with the best intentions but definitely bought more than I intended to. However I still don't think I did too badly as the things I got were mainly things that were missing (the perfect camel coat, boyfriend denim that actually fits and a very versatile pair of black trousers to name a few.) Now I feel like my wardrobe has everything I 'need', especially after my big clear out (check out this post if you're after tips!) Although there are still a few key bits I'd like to add in.

This year I want to cut back on buying clothes for a number of reasons, mainly so I can spend money on other things like experiences! I also have bits that I love but rarely wear for some reason or other so I'm hoping this will encourage me to make more use of what I've got. Finally I think I've got a little stuck in a wardrobe rut, all too often I'm reaching for the familiar combo of grey jumper/skinnies/trainers which is fine but it'd be fun to experiment a little more with the things I already own.

I'm not going to call this 'The 5 Piece French Wardrobe' as I don't know if the French actually shop like this and I kind of have my own rules. These are:

1 | I'll allow myself one thing a month. Mainly because I'm a bit of a shopaholic and to go cold turkey would just be too hard! Also, if I say I'm allowed something I'm less likely to want it. I know, I'm a child.

2 | Basics do count. People use the 'French Wardrobe' concept to add in trend pieces once their basic collection is complete but these days the thought of buying things simply because they're in fashion (with the exception of shoes) doesn't appeal to me. Basics are all I wear so therefore I think they should be counted unless they need replacing.

3 | Accessories also count. I've included them because I tend to buy loads and then never actually wear them. This way I'll be more thoughtful about what jewellery/hats etc I buy. And it goes without saying that shoes count because we all know I buy way too many!

So I think I'm going to call this 'The Curated Closet Challenge' (because I like me some alliteration!) I'm planning to post about this regularly, mainly to motivate myself but hopefully if you're thinking of doing something similar it'll help...we can create a support group or something because it's going to be tough haha! Although I'm not planning to be too strict with myself as sometimes when CF is being an absolute bean and I'm stuck in the house for weeks on end a little ASOS order can be a perfect pick me up! But we'll see how we go.

What do you think? Would love to know if you're doing something similar, we can get through it together *holds hands in a circle*

  6. I ought to try this too, my wardrobe is full of stuff I don't actually need so it'd be nice to have it less full with things actually wear

  9. I'll hold your hand in the circle, Josie:) I'm also cutting back on buying clothes this year...mainly for monetary reasons...heh!

  10. I totally agree with this philosophy! I had years and years of buying far too many clothes and it was a real waste of money. I'm trying the capsule wardrobe thing out at the moment, which seems to be working well for me. Long may it continue!x

  11. I think I might do this too, I do like to buy, but I also like to eat and pay rent, so I definitely need to cut back :) I bought a top in the boohoo sale so that will be my Jan purchse. Eep!

  13. This sounds fab! I'm similar to you with things in my wardrobe I love but just never wear. I don't know why I have them if I never wear them. I wish I had the guts to be ruthless and get rid!

  14. I really should join you on this but I find a bit of sneaky shopping solves any problem! But I am definitely going to try and cut back as much as I can - I know my card would be happy if I did! xx

  15. I'm quite bad at these, I tend to opt more for statement pieces over versatile. I need to be more savvy with my pennies this year though as like you I'd rather spend my money on experiences :)

  18. Oh my, I'm seriously sitting here applauding you. I don't know if I could stick to one thing a month - which sounds so superficial, and materialistic, but shopping is just fun and relaxing to me. But I do think I need to start investing in staples and stop buying impulse, randomly trendy pieces.

Good luck with this, I know you can do it! I'm excited to follow along :)

  46. Sounds like a great idea! I don't go shopping much for clothes... I think I get my spending urges out by doing grocery shopping every week and then crying when I look at the receipt and see how expensive everything is... It makes me want to save my money and stops me from spending any on clothes 😁

  50. Sounds like a good plan. I'm working a capsule wardrobe at the moment due to the fact that I moved abroad and could only fit so much in my suitcase. It's been good and bad, good because it's easier to make decisions but bad because I miss A LOT of my other clothes! Looking forward to seeing your progress.
