A bored hospital selfie that I took whilst waiting for the doctor...he came in as soon as I took it, which was embarrassing.
Hi! So yesterday I had my first appointment at the CF Clinic of 2014 and I've got off to a good start! I last went there at the beginning of December where I was put on IVs over Christmas but this time things were a lot more positive. I'm 50.5kg so I've put on about 2kg since my last clinic, I'm aiming to put on at least a kilo more because CF is less of a pain in the butt when I weigh over 50kg. So say I weigh 52kg, get a cold and lose my appetite (*sobsob*) I'll lose like 2kg and still be a healthy weight then if I was the weight I am at the moment where I'd lose 2 and go to 48kg...it doesn't sound like much difference between the two but it's so much harder to fight an infection when my weight is lower hence why I'm always trying to keep it up. I think I am the only person who's trying to pile on the pounds right now, everyone else is sobbing into their salads while I'm there with my 20 chicken nuggets like 'Mwahahaha!'
Anyway, enough of weight talk I'm sure it's very boring! My lung function was 39% which is better than the last one (that was 35%) but it's nowhere near my best, it's not even average for me (I'm usually somewhere in the mid 40s) so it was a bit poop. To be honest though my lungs aren't feeling too bad, I think this time it was just because I'm a bit bunged up with a cold which affected my breathing. To do a lung function test you have to blow into this machine and if you have a blocked nose or something it can really affect your technique so I don't think that this time it was an accurate indication of how my lungs are doing because my breathing is actually alrite.
So that was kind of short and sweet, just like clinic which was a nice change! I went out afterwards to Frankie & Benny's with my friend (yes again, we like it there ok?) to put some calories towards those extra kilos! I had the New Jersey chicken, it's a chicken breast topped with bacon slices, pulled pork, BBQ sauce and cheese...basically a heart attack on a plate but a CFer's perfect meal!

It sounds like we're in a similar boat! Some of my housemates are on the 5:2 diet and I'm there like 'chocolate for meeeee'. It's nice to hear about CF as well, I think educating people on the REAL journey is much more effective than reading some leaflet! xxx
ReplyDeleteI'm really glad you managed to gain some weight, you keep eating at McDonalds gurrrrrl. If I lived closer I'd totally bake you cakes. Keep up the good work! I also hope your cold goes soon so your lung function is higher.

I definitely don't envy your illness, it sounds terrible and after learning about it in Biology last year (I should have taken English Language instead, but I guess I'm more of a well rounded person because of it?) I have all the sympathy in the world for you! However, it would be nice to eat whatever you want and not feel guilty afterwards... I'm glad in terms of CF 2014 is going well so far though :) Really liking reading these CF posts, they're very interesting! xx
ReplyDeleteThanks for giving this update Josie, its great about the weight and I say use this all to your advantage, eat as much creamy, rich, greasy things as you possibly can. We all can't get away with that, but you certainly can, please do so on our behalf. Hope the lung function improves doll
ReplyDeleteYay for weight gain! I'm 5lbs away from goal and eating chocolate like a pro xx
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the weight gain! Sounds like you're kicking CF in the butt so far this year :) Sending a truck load of chicken nuggets and hugs round! haha xxx
ReplyDeleteOh gads, how mortifying getting caught doing a selfie. You look damn good though so fuck it! Hahaha, enjoy your nuggets! :) x x x

Congrats on your weight gain lovely, that's great news! Hopefully next time you're at clinic you'll get a better and more accurate reading, once you've shifted your cold. I love Frankie and Bennys (how can I be hungry at 11.35pm?! I just ate a Wispa!), and your choice sounds like something my boyfriend would absolutely love!! I'm far too predictable and stick with my trusty old spag bol - they do my favourite eat out spag bol which is some mean feat since I've tried alot :) do you like KFC? I never ate chicken before I met my boyfriend but I looove it now. KFC popcorn chicken is so nice! xxx p.s. I'm definitely not going to be cutting out fizzy drinks anytime soon, I'm one of those annoying people that says 'what's the point in that, enjoy life and do what you want!' paha :)
ReplyDeleteI am so glad your lungs function better, not a huge increase but still an increase, I am sure at spring time, say March, you will see an even better result! Love F&Bs ;) So totally not judging anything.
